How to Get a Dealer License in Georgia

Eight steps to a Georgia auto dealer license: eligibility, license types, the 4-hour course, the $35,000 bond, insurance, sales tax and the $170 fee.

Selling cars for profit in Georgia takes an auto dealer license. The requirements are clear, and most of the work is in getting the paperwork right. Here is the full path.

8 steps to your license

1. Check that you qualify

You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid Georgia driver's license.

2. Choose the license type

Most dealers get the used auto dealer license, also called the independent dealer license, which allows used cars only. With an agreement from a manufacturer, you can get a new auto dealer license and sell both new and used vehicles.

3. Pick a location

The site must meet local zoning, and you need a business license from the county. Keep in mind:

  • The application needs photos of the business, including the sign.
  • The business needs a landline phone number.
  • A zoning certification goes with the application.

4. Take the pre-licensing course

The 4-hour course from the Georgia Independent Automobile Dealers Association covers state law, dealership operations and consumer protection. Proof of completion goes with the application.

5. Get a surety bond

The bond guarantees you will follow state law as a dealer. Georgia requires $35,000.

6. Get proof of liability insurance

Submit a certificate of insurance on an ACORD form with:

  • The policy number and coverage amount
  • Your name and address as on the application
  • As certificate holder: State Board of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers, 237 Coliseum Drive, Macon, GA 31217

7. Get a sales tax number

Apply through the Georgia Department of Revenue so you can collect and report sales tax. You will need an email address, the federal identification number if you have one, the name, address and Social Security number of every owner, and the business's legal name, mailing address and physical location.

8. Complete the dealer license application

The application from the Motor Vehicle Division asks about your background, finances and business plans, any disciplinary actions, and citizenship or immigration status, and it must be notarized. Submit it with the $170 fee. If it is approved, the license arrives by mail.

Before you apply

Requirements, fees and bond amounts change. Confirm the current rules with the Georgia Department of Revenue before you file. This guide is general information, not legal advice; for questions about your situation, talk to a lawyer.
