Getting a California dealer license is the first step; keeping it valid is what keeps the business running. Renewal comes around every two years and involves forms, a continuing education class and fees. Here is the whole process, in order.

4 steps to renewal
1. Know why the DMV asks
The two-year cycle lets the DMV confirm that dealers still meet the rules and hold the right qualifications as regulations change. It is also when the DMV records big changes such as a new address or building, or a transfer to new owners, and a good moment to bring your own records up to date. The DMV sends notice of the renewal date ahead of time, so start early and avoid a last-minute rush.
2. Complete the continuing education
The pre-licensing course is only required once. After that, every licensed dealer takes continuing education every two years: a DMV-approved class of at least four hours, which can be done online. It covers new laws and regulations, ethics, consumer protection, running a dealership and best practices. At the end you receive a DMV Certificate of Completion as proof.
3. Gather the forms
- The renewal application, with basic business details, the type of license and the fees, including county-specific costs
- Proof of continuing education
- The Report or Replace Lost, Stolen, or Surrendered Occupational License Special Plates form, needed only if you are not renewing all your plates
Wholesale-only dealers have optional exemptions: a $50,000 Bond Exemption Application for wholesalers who sell fewer than 25 vehicles, and a Continuing Education Exemption Application. The DMV website also lists renewal options online and posts notices when requirements change.
4. Pay the fees and mail it in
- $125 renewal application fee
- $92 per dealer plate, plus county fees
- $94 per motorcycle plate, plus county fees
- $300 per location New Motor Vehicle Board fee (new car dealers)
- $1 Family Support Program fee
- $74 autobroker endorsement fee
Fees change, so check the DMV site before you pay. Send all forms and fees to: Department of Motor Vehicles, Occupational Licensing Section, P.O. Box 932342, MS L224, Sacramento, CA 94232-3420.
