How to Get a Dealer License in New Jersey

Eight steps to a New Jersey dealer license: business registration, location rules, fingerprinting, the document checklist, fees, insurance and the $10,000 bond.

New Jersey has its own way of classifying dealers and a long document checklist. This guide covers new and used motor vehicle dealers, from registering the business to the final inspection.

At a glance

Issued byNew Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission
Surety bond$10,000
Fees$100 license, $257.50 registration with five sets of dealer plates
Insurance$100,000 to $250,000 bodily injury, $25,000 property damage

8 steps to your license

1. Check which license you need

New Jersey licenses new and used motor vehicle dealers, used motor vehicle dealers, moped dealers, auto body repair shops, fleet and private inspection facilities, leasing companies and driving schools. This guide follows the two dealer licenses.

2. Register the business

Register at least 15 days before opening, and get a federal employer identification number from the IRS online.

3. Set up a location in New Jersey

It holds all permanent records, such as payroll and W-4/W-2 files, and must have:

  • A desk, a chair, a phone and a working safe for documents
  • At least 8 by 9 feet of space
  • A display area for at least two vehicles
  • A permanent, legible exterior sign
  • Compliance with local ordinances

4. Start the fingerprint background check

You must show the check has been requested; instructions for the fingerprints come after the business application is filed.

5. Gather the documents

  • The filing certificate for an alternate name, if any, and the formation papers or corporate resolution
  • Photos of the location and signs
  • Driver's licenses and passport-size color photos of owners, partners and officers
  • For out-of-state LLCs and corporations, the Treasury Department certificate of authority
  • The New Jersey Sales Tax Certificate of Authority and proof of the federal taxpayer ID
  • The deed or purchase agreement and a phone bill for the location
  • The original manufacturer's certificate for new vehicle dealers
  • Municipal approval of the location, the business hours and the dealer certification of location type

6. Submit and pay

The fees are $100 for the license and $257.50 for registration, which includes five sets of dealer plates. Mail the application to Motor Vehicle Commission, Business Licensing Services Bureau, Dealer Licensing Unit, P.O. Box 171, 225 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08666-0171.

7. Pass the inspection

Once the full application is in, the inspection is scheduled.

8. Show insurance and the bond

After approval, provide a certificate of insurance with $100,000 to $250,000 of bodily injury and $25,000 of property damage liability, and a $10,000 surety bond for the dates of the license.

Before you apply

Requirements, fees and bond amounts change. Confirm the current rules with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission before you file. This guide is general information, not legal advice; for questions about your situation, talk to a lawyer.
